TOLEDO, OH – The University at Buffalo softball team completed a MAC-opening weekend sweep of the Toledo Rockets on Sunday afternoon with a 6-3 win at Scott Park. The Bulls have now won five in a row and are 3-0 in conference play for the first time in school history.
The Bulls got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning as sophomore Sarah Edwards opened the frame with a long double to center field. Danielle Lallos singled to put runners on the corners with no outs and Edwards came in to score on an infield single from by senior Lauren Gambone.
The Rockets took the lead in the top of the third with a pair of runs against starter Charlotte Miller, which sent the Bulls to the bullpen and freshman Lace Smith gave UB 4.1 solid innings of work. Buffalo regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth as the Bulls loaded the bases with nobody out. Following a pop up, sophomore Danielle Lallos hit a ground ball to short, but Toledo was unable to make the play at home, tying the game at two.
With the bases still loaded, pinch hitter Essence Savinon singled to center field to drive in junior Ashton Earnhardt and fellow pinch hitter Catrell Robertson singled up the middle, which scored freshman Katie Weimer and gave the Bulls a 4-2 lead.
Toledo scored one in the top of the sixth to pull within 4-3, but UB answered with a pair of insurance runs in the bottom half of the inning. Junior Savanna Norcio belted a one-out home run to right center and then UB put runners on the corners with two outs when Lallos singled to left, scoring Earnhardt to give UB a 6-3 lead into the seventh. Smith retired the Rockets in order in the seventh to clinch the victory.
Smith picked up her fourth win of the season as she scattered three hits in 4.1 innings of work, while walking one and striking out one. The Bulls pounded out 14 hits led by a 3-for-4 performance from Edwards. Norcio, Earnhardt, Lallos, and Gambone each finished with two-hit games. In all, eight different players recorded hits.
"It was great," said head coach Trena Peel. "We had a little bit of a slow start today, but we got it going and strung together some hits and like I've said before, it is about stepping up when an opportunity presents itself and today we took advantage of those opportunities."
The Bulls will play at Nan Harvey Field on Tuesday at 4:00 pm when they host Canisius.
