HAMPTON, VA – The University at Buffalo softball team dropped a pair of games on Friday at the Lady Pirate Classic, hosted by Hampton University.
The Bulls dropped their morning contest to Quinnipiac, 3-1, unable to overcome a rough second inning where the Bobcats scored all of their runs. UB committed four errors in the top of the second as all three runs were unearned.
Buffalo got a run back in the bottom of the fourth as sophomore Danielle Lallos reached on a two-out single and moved to second on an error. She then came in to score as senior Lauren Gambone hit an infield single and both runners advanced following a throwing error on the Quinnipiac shortstop. The Bulls put a runner on base in each of the last three innings, but could not score.
Charlotte Miller picked up the loss as she struck out six batters in 6.0 innings. All three runs against her were unearned. Freshman Brieanna Baker pitched the seventh and struck out two in a perfect inning. UB recorded four hits in the game coming from Lallos, Gambone, freshman Courtney Gilbert and senior Kenzie Koch.
In the afternoon contest, UB was unable to hold on to a 7-3 lead in the seventh, falling in walk-off fashion, 8-7. The Lady Pirates got on the board first with two runs in the first and one in the second to take a 3-0 lead, but then the UB offense got going as the Bulls rattled off seven straight runs.
Buffalo put two runners in scoring position with just one away in the third when Gilbert drilled a triple into right field, which plated two. Freshman Katie Weimer then drove in Gilbert on a groundout to tie the game up. It wouldn't be the last runs driven in by her.
Sophomore Sarah Edwards drew a one-out walk in the top of the fifth and the Bulls put two in scoring position following a double down the left field line by Gilbert. Weimer then drove in three more runs as she corked her first career home run over the center field wall, giving the Bulls a 6-3 lead.
The Bulls tacked on another run in the sixth as Leandra Jew opened the inning with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. She came in to score on a sacrifice fly from Nicolette Jacobs, which gave UB a 7-3 advantage.
That lead stood until the bottom of the seventh when Bobbi Langlois came on in relief of Ally Power. Hampton loaded the bases with nobody out, which prompted Power to re-enter the game. She walked the first batter to drive in a run, but with a 7-4 lead she struck out the next two Hampton batters. Back-to-back singles and a fielder's choice each drove in a Lady Pirate run, tying the game up at 7-7 and then the next batter was hit by the pitch, giving Hampton the come-from-behind win.
Power picked up the loss as she went 6.2 innings and striking out eight batters. She was credited with five runs, three of those were earned. UB had eight hits, including two each from Gilbert and Jew. Of the eight hits today, five of those went for extra bases. Weimer drove in a career-best four runs, while Adriana Lis hit her first career double.
The Bulls will continue action at the Lady Pirate Classic tomorrow when they face Rhode Island at 11am and Princeton at 1pm.
