
Bulls Win Home Opener over Cleveland State, 5-2

WILLIAMSVILLE, NY - The University at Buffalo men's tennis teams played in the familiar confines of the Miller Tennis Center and in front of their passionate fans for the first time this season. UB defeated the Cleveland State Vikings, 5-2 to improve to 6-4 on the season.
The Bulls got off to a strong start by winning all three doubles matches. Amar Hromic and Pablo Alvarez won their fifth match of the season in dual action. They defeated VanMeter/Mick 6-4. Buffalo secured the doubles point when Tony Miller and Akhil Mehta won at No. 2 doubles action over Goth/Slade, 7-6. Sergio Arevalillo and Ethan Nittolo made it a clean sweep in doubles action with a close 7-6 victory.
UB's momentum carried over to singles action where they found two quick results at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Hromic dispatched Buffington, 6-3, 6-4, in the straight-set affair, while Alvarez improved his season record at No. 2 singles to 8-2 with his 6-2, 6-3 win over Radosevic. On his career Alvarez now has 57 career singles wins across all competition.
Mehta sealed the victory for Buffalo with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Mick in No. 6 singles action. With Saturday's 5-2 win over the Vikings, the team now holds a 4-2 record all-time against Cleveland State.
Arevalillo was also victorious over VanMeter. After winning the first set, 7-6, he surged to victory with a 6-3 win in the second set. Nittolo battled back in the second set to win,6-4, and force a third set, after dropping the first set, 6-3. In the tie breaker Nittolo wasn't able to carry over his momentum from the second set and dropped the tiebreaker, 10-4.
Head coach Lee Nickell was pleased with his team's performance against Cleveland State.
"The energy we brought today in doubles set the tone for the rest of the match. I am very pleased with the way we are competing and look forward to our match with Youngtown State."
Buffalo will remain home for their next match on Friday against Youngstown State. Doubles action is slated to begin at 1:00 pm.
