WILLIAMSVILLE, NY – The Bulls continued their six-game homestand the same way it began by winning over Youngstown State, 5-2. UB won the doubles point and were victorious at No. 1,2,3, and 6 singles. They are now 13-2 all-time against the Penguins.
Sergio Arevalillo and Ethan Nittolo dispatched Mekawi/Tolesani at No. 3 Doubles, 6-1. It was the duo's seventh win across all competition this season.
With wins at both doubles and singles against Youngstown, Pablo Alvarez moved to 11th in school history with 99 combined victories. Alvarez and Amar Hromic won easily at No. 1 Doubles over Morth/Dahan, 6-2, while Tony Miller and Akhil Mehta defeated Kritzinger/Purser, 6-3.
Due to the men's and women's teams playing simultaneously at the Tennis Miller Center, singles play started with No. 3-No.6 singles rather than all six singles matches happening at once.
Arevalillo picked up the Bulls' first singles point winning in straight sets over Purser, 7-5, 6-3. Artur Culicovschi earned his second singles win as a Bull in a three-set thriller. He won the third set, 6-0, over Tolesani, after the match was knotted at one set a piece. Culicovschi won the first set, 6-4, but Tolesani forced a third set with 6-4 win in set 2.
Alvarez secured the win for the Bulls at No. 2 singles in straight sets over Dahan, 6-2, 6-2. Hromic put an exclamation point on the match at No. 1 singles. The senior won 6-4, 7-6, over Morth, to help the Bulls earn a 5-2 win over the Penguins over Youngstown State.
"I am very proud of the energy and effort our guys put forth today, head coach Lee Nickell said after the Bulls' final non-conference match of the season. "The top of our lineup continues to play very good tennis, and we are really playing fantastic doubles. I am also proud of Artur for closing out his third set. As of right now we are ready to go into the next few weeks with a good focus on improving physically and mentally, and can't wait for our match against Binghamton."
The Bulls now turn their focus to conference action with matches against Binghamton on March 18 and Western Michigan on March 20. Both matches will be played at home for Buffalo.
