BETHLEHEM, PA – The men's and women's cross country teams traveled to Bethlehem, PA on Saturday to compete in the 43rd annual Lehigh Paul Short Invitational. The race consists of the men's and women's gold and open races. The event takes teams from across the nation in Divisions I, II, and III that are ranked regionally and nationally and pits them against each other in a competitive race. This year, the Buffalo teams competed in the gold race.
The men were able to take home an impressive 15th place finish out of 38 teams. Their placement was able to help them surpass regionally ranked LaSalle, Stony Brook, St. Joe's, Lehigh, and Temple. The top runner for the Bulls was Andrew Berge, who completed the race in 24:39. This was a personal best on the course for the junior, and a fourth best finish all-time for a Buffalo runner on the course.
The women nabbed a 17th place finish out of 45 teams. Their placement was enough to beat Stony Brook and Quinnipac, which were ranked higher than Buffalo in the most recent regional rankings. Freshman Stephanie Ward proved, once again, to be a top runner for the Bulls. She was the top finisher with a time of 20:56, the fastest for a female Bull on this course in all-time. Her time was fast enough to beat Buffalo's Jenny Koeppel's time in 2004 (29:59), which was an NCAA qualifying time.
The Bulls are seeing action again on Saturday, October 15th at the NCAA Pre-Nationals.
