
UB Defeats Yale, 4-3, in Historic Victory

BUFFALO, NY - The Bulls started their three-match weekend trip to Yale with a 4-3 win over the hosts. After winning the doubles point, UB won three singles matches to defeat Yale for the first time in program history and an Ivy League opponent for the second-straight week.
Pablo Alvarez and Amar Hromic won 6-3 in No. 1 doubles, while Sergio Arevalillo and Ethan Nittolo won their doubles match, 6-4, to secure the doubles point for the Bulls. Alvarez continued his strong start of the Spring season with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Yale's Doehler.
Arevalillo succeeded in No. 4 singles with a 6-2, 5-4 victory. The Bulls fourth point of the competition came in No. 1 singles. After dropping the first set, 7-5, Hromic won the second set in convincing fashion, 6-1 to force a third set. With the match tied 3-3 and victory within his grasp, Hromic won the third set, 6-4 and clinched the match for the Bulls when Zigi Wang hit his return volley wide.
Not only did Hromic seal the match for the Bulls, but he defeated the 118th ranked singles player in Division 1 men's tennis. For the second-straight match the Bulls defeated an Ivy League opponent. As mentioned above, this is the first time UB men's tennis has defeated Yale in dual match competition.
"I am proud of the way we won this match today," men's tennis head coach Lee Nickell said. "Yale is a tough opponent and they didn't give it to us. We need to do better at the bottom of the lineup, and we are excited to give those guys another opportunity tonight against Monmouth."
UB will remain at Yale this weekend for two more matches. They takes on Monmouth in singles action at 6 p.m before wrapping up the doubles play on Sunday morning. Their final match of the weekend will be against Boston College after their match against Monmouth scheduled for 9 a.m. concludes.
