HAMILTON, NY - The University at Buffalo, The State University of New York cross country teams opened up their 2015 campaign on Saturday afternoon at the Colgate Harry Lang Invitational. The women's team collected a fourth place finish out of eight teams while the men finished sixth out of eight squads.
On the women's side, the race plan was executed well as they worked as a pack through the first mile before making moves through the hills in the second mile. Freshman Rachel Barich closed hard in the final mile as she earned the best finish for the Bulls in her first collegiate meet, taking home a fifth place finish in the field of 111 athletes. Junior Melinda Wheeler started off her season on a strong note, earning a 12th place finish while freshman Chardae Henry took home 15th place in her first race as a Bull.
The women's race was a much tighter team race as Bucknell took home 1st place with 52 points, Albany finished 2nd with 53 points while Syracuse and UB tied for third with 66 points but the Orange took third over UB based on head-to-head placing.
On the men's, UB started three freshman and three returning runners as they took home the sixth place finish. After a slow start the Bulls moved their way up through the field in the final two miles as freshman Everett Geiger finished in 29th place overall in his first collegiate race. Sophomore Timothy Whelan took home 41st place while senior Austin Coneys finished strong in 47th place.
Navy took home the men's title as they collected 27 points while Syracuse came in second with 29 points and Bucknell finished third with 86 points. Buffalo came up 23 points short of Colgate for fifth place.
The two squads will return to action next weekend as the Bulls host their lone home meet of the season, the UB Stampede Invitational. For more information on the UB Stampede Invitational, click here.
