
Bulls End Non-Conference Play With Two Defeats

SYRACUSE, NY – The University at Buffalo, The State University of New York volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on Sunday to end non-conference play. The Bulls lost 3-0 to New Hampshire during the afternoon and to Syracuse, 3-0, at night.
In their first match of the day, UB fell in straight sets to New Hampshire, 25-23, 25-21, 25-22, in what was tight match through out. The Bulls trailed by large amount in the opening set, 21-13, but continued to fight and made things close. The Bulls went on an 8-1 run to pull within 22-21, getting three kills during the run from freshman Valisha Watkins. UB remained within one at 24-23, but a kills from New Hampshire clinched the set.
It was the Bulls who got out to the lead in the second as a kill from senior Megan Lipski gave UB a 13-7 lead. The Bulls continued to lead 19-14 when UNH went on a 7-1 run to take a 21-20 lead. UB tied it up at 21-21, but the Wildcats scored the final four points of the set.
The third set remained tight through out as the two squads remained tied at 21-21, but New Hampshire ended the match on a 4-1 run.
Lipski had a team-high 15 kills, while completing the double-double with 13 digs. Watkins added 14 kills, but had nine errors in the match. Senior Akeila Lain finished with five kills and no errors. Senior setter Marissa Prinzbach finished with 38 assists and 11 digs.
Sophomore Tessa Ooyama led the Bulls with 15 digs to tie her career high, while Niki Bozinoski added 13. Freshman Megan Wernette led UB with two blocks, to go along with her four kills.
In the nightcap, Syracuse defeated UB, 25-13, 25-16, 25-10, as the Orange hit .333 for the match. Watkins led the Bulls with 10 kills, but also had 10 errors. Prinzbach had another double-double with 21 assists and 10 digs. Ooyama led UB with 13 digs.
Following the tournament, both Lipski and Prinzbach were named to the All-Tournament Team.
After playing their first 12 matches away from home, including trips to the Big Ten, Pac-12, SEC and ACC, the Bulls will finally open the home portion of their schedule with their MAC opener on Thursday night. UB will host Akron at 7:00 pm at Alumni Arena.
