
Ball State Takes Two From UB On Saturday

OXFORD, OH – The University at Buffalo, The State University of New York, softball team dropped two games to Ball State on Saturday evening, losing 8-7 in extra innings in the opener, before falling 12-4 in six innings in the night cap.
The first game of the doubleheader saw the two teams head into extra innings with both squads having an opportunity to come out on top. Ball State scored first in the bottom of the third with a pair of runs before UB got on the board in the top of the fourth as it tied the game up on a two-run double from sophomore Savanna Norcio.
The Bulls then scored single runs over the next three innings to take a 5-2 advantage. Senior Alexis Curtiss hit a solo home run in the fifth, sophomore Ashton Earnhardt hit an RBI single in the sixth and junior Lauren Gambone homered in the seventh, but Ball State tied the game up with three in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings.
In the eighth inning, Curtiss hit an infield single to drive in Norcio, which gave the Bulls a 7-6 lead, but Ball State tied the game up in the bottom of the eighth and then won it in the ninth as the Cardinals took advantage of a pair of UB errors before Ball State hit a walk-off double.
The two teams combined for 26 hits, each finishing with 13. Norcio and Curtiss each went 3-for-5 in the game, while freshman Sarah Edwards went 2-for-4 from the plate. Redshirt sophomore Bobbi Langlois picked up the loss in relief.
In game two, Ball State got out to an early lead as the Cardinals scored the first four runs of the game, until UB got on the board in the top of the fourth. Freshman Makayla Kowaliuk came on as a pinch hitter and drove in a pair of runs on a double to center field, but Ball State answered with two more in the bottom half of the inning to take a 6-2 lead.
The Bulls answered back with two more runs in the top of the fifth as Norcio and Earnhardt both reached base to lead off the frame and senior Hayley Barrow doubled to left center, driving in both runs and pulling the Bulls within 6-4. Ball State scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to end the game and defeat UB, 12-4.
UB finished with seven hits in the game, including multi-hit games from Barrow and senior Karly Nevez.
After playing 33 games away from home, UB will look to get its home schedule underway when the Bulls host Detroit on Wednesday in a doubleheader beginning at Noon. Wednesday's doubleheader will begin stretch of eight straight home games for the Bulls.
