BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo, The State University of New York, softball team snapped a 13-game losing streak as the Bulls split their home-opening doubleheader against Canisius on Wednesday at Nan Harvey Field. The Bulls dropped the opener 10-3, but came back to defeat the Griffs, 4-1 in the nightcap.
The Bulls used a solid pitching performance from redshirt sophomore Bobbi Langlois in the second game as she pitched a complete-game five hitter for her fourth win of the season. UB got on the board in the second inning as freshman Danielle Lallos singled to center field to score junior Lauren Gambone from second base.
UB added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning as freshman Leandra Jew opened the inning with a bunt single. The Bulls loaded the bases with one out when Lauren Gambone hit a fielder's choice, which scored Jew. A throw over to first was dropped by the Canisius fielder, scoring a second run and giving the Bulls a 3-0 lead.
The Bulls extended their lead to 4-0 in the fourth inning as senior Karly Nevez drove in Lallos, who reached earlier in the inning on an error. Canisius scored one run in the top of the fifth, but that is all it was able to get against Langlois, who struck out four in the win.
Six different UB players recorded hits in the win.
"It was great to see us fight back after the first game and get a win," said head coach Trena Peel. "Bobbi gave us a great performance in the circle and we got some timely hits even without our big bats swinging it well. Hopefully we can ride this momentum into a busy weekend."
In the first game today, Canisius scored runs in each of the first four innings, including a five-run fourth inning. The Griffs scored two in the top of the first, but a single from Hayley Barrow drove in Alexis Curtiss, who opened the first with a double. A fielder's choice in the bottom of the second pulled UB within 3-2, but Canisius scored two in the third and five in the fourth to take 10-2 lead.
The Bulls scored one run in the bottom of the fifth as junior Kenzie Koch singled up the middle to score Curtiss and pull the Bulls within 10-3.
Freshman Charlotte Miller picked up the loss as she allowed eight hits and nine runs, including six of those earned, in 3.1 innings pitched. Langlois came on in relief and allowed just two hits and one unearned run in 3.2 innings pitched.
UB got seven hits in the game, including a 3-for-4 performance from Curtiss in the leadoff position. Freshman Sarah Edwards went 0-for-1 from the plate, but did draw a pair of walks.
UB will now return to the road for its next nine games beginning with a contest at Detroit tomorrow at 3:00 pm.
