AKRON, OH – The University at Buffalo, The State University of New York, softball team got a solid performance in the circle from freshman Charlotte Miller, but Akron scored a single run in the seventh to defeat the Bulls, 1-0. Despite playing at Akron, the Bulls were the home team in the game as the series was moved away from Nan Harvey Field due to unplayable field conditions.
Miller and Akron pitcher Erin Seiler were dealing as both pitchers put up zeros over the first six innings. The Bulls picked up their first hit in the bottom of the fourth as freshman Sarah Edwards hit an infield single, but despite putting two runners on, the Bulls were unable to score.
Freshman Danielle Lallos doubled to lead off the fifth inning and moved to third with one out, but a strike out and ground out ended that UB threat. The game remained scoreless into the seventh when Akron's Alyssa Nicholas hit a leadoff home run to left center to break the scoreless tie. Edwards led off the seventh with another infield single, but couldn't get past second base as the Bulls were retired to end the game.
"I'm so proud of the way we fought today," said head coach Trena Peel. "This was one of our best games all year, but we still came up short. Charlotte pitched her heart out and Danielle made some great plays at shortstop. The difference in the game again was hitting for us. We had runners in scoring position three times and we just couldn't find a hole to hit through."
Miller picked up the tough-luck loss despite allowing just three hits, while striking out two and walking one. Edwards reached base three time as she went 2-for-2 with a walk, while Lallos had the other hit.
Seiler struck out nine UB batters in the game and allowed just three hits as she picked up her 15th win of the year.
The Bulls and Zips will complete their two-game series tomorrow at 1:00 pm.
