NORTHRIDGE, CA – The University at Buffalo, The State University of New York, softball team fell to Iona on Sunday morning, 6-4. The loss drops the Bulls to 6-14 on the season.

UB got on the board first in the top of the first inning as junior Lauren Gambone drove in Savanna Norcio with a single and Alexis Curtiss came in to score on an error by the Iona left fielder. UB led 2-0 into the bottom of the first when Iona answered with a grand slam in the bottom half of the inning to take a 4-2 lead.

The Gaels scored two more in the bottom of the second inning as they took a 6-2 lead before the Bulls tried to fight back late. In the top of the fifth, freshman Leandra Jew led off the inning with a single up the middle and she came in to score on a double to center field by Norcio.

The Bulls added another run in the top of the seventh as Ashton Earnhardt and Norcio hit back-to-back singles to begin the inning. Earnhardt came in to score as she advanced to third on a fielder's choice and came in to score on a throwing error by the shortstop. That run pulled the Bulls within 6-4, but they would get no closer.

"It's tough to beat a team when you spot them six runs in the first two innings," said head coach Trena Peel. "Hayley did a great job in relief today. We had plenty of opportunities to score and this one leaves a bad taste in our mouths because we know we didn't do the little things offensively to win."

Norcio went a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate as Gambone also had multiple hits as she went 2-for-3 from the dish. Redshirt sophomore Bobbi Langlois picked up the loss as she allowed six runs in 1.1 innings pitched. Hayley Barrow pitched the final 4.2 innings in relief, allowing no runs.

UB will play a doubleheader at Cal St. Fullerton on Tuesday night beginning at 6:00 pm EST.
