UB Men's Tennis Edges Previously Undefeated Cleveland State, 4-3

WESTLAKE, OH – The University at Buffalo, State University of New York men's tennis team outlasted host Cleveland State, 4-3, Saturday evening at Paramount Tennis Club. The Bulls (5-3) won their fourth out of their last five matches, while handing the Vikings (3-1) their first loss of the spring season.
"This was a major test for our guys," said head coach Lee Nickell. "To drive to Cleveland and play on a new surface with just an hour to prepare was brutal. Our guys dealt with the adversity and did a good job closing out a close match. I am very proud of Sergio (Arevalillo) winning a third set in such a pressure situation."
UB opened the match winning two of three doubles matches to take the doubles point. Sophomore Jonathan Hannestad and junior Sergio Arevalillo secured a 6-4 win at the number one spot, but CSU picked up a 6-4 win at second doubles to deadlock action at 1-1. Junior Akhil Mehta and freshman Noah Hajdu-Andersson edged the Vikings, 7-6 (3) to secure the doubles point for the Bulls.
In singles play, the teams went one-for-one trading victories. UB fell at the top spot, before senior Sebastian Ionescu defeated Ali Shabib, 6-3, 6-2, at second singles. The Vikings took the number three match, but UB again answered. Hannestad battled to outlast Manuel Bellutti, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. CSU knotted play at 3-3 with a win at sixth singles.
Arevalillo led UB to victory in come-from-behind fashion. He suffered a 7-5 setback in the first set, but would force a third winning the second, 6-4. Arevalillo cruised to a 6-3 win in the final frame.
The Bulls will return to action on Feb. 20-21 hosting Niagara on Friday at 7 pm and Youngstown State Saturday at 1 pm.
