BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo, State University of New York men's tennis team won its third straight and sixth of last seven matches defeating Youngstown State 5-2 Saturday at Miller Tennis Center.
Prior to the start of the match, the Bulls welcomed Ruben to the roster as part of a Team IMPACT initiative. He is the newest and youngest member of the Bulls' squad.
The Bulls (7-3) won the doubles point with victories at the first and third spots. Sophomore Jonathan Hannestad and junior Sergio Arevalillo posted an 8-5 victory in the top match, while juniors Amar Hromic and Akhil Mehta defeated the Penguins' (2-5) third doubles duo, 8-3.
The Bulls won four matches at third through sixth singles. Junior Pablo Alvarez defeated Bassem El Mekawi, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in third singles. At four, Hromic outlasted Dawoud Kabli, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1. Arevalillo was victorious at five, ousting Youssef Sherif, 6-1, 6-3, and Hannestad won sixth singles over Victor Pereira, 6-4, 6-1.
"Even though we got two wins this weekend, we still aren't at the level we expect," said sixth-year head coach Lee Nickell. "The coaching staff is determined to create a dominant team, and we have yet to have all six players play at their best to give us the result we want. There is a strenuous schedule ahead and we have to be 100 percent disciplined if we plan on winning anymore matches."
The Bulls will travel to Princeton to take on Monmouth Saturday, Feb. 28 at 6 pm, before facing the host Tigers Sunday, March 1 at 10 am.
