Men's Tennis Falls to Nationally-Ranked Central Florida, 4-0

WEST POINT, NY – The University at Buffalo, State University of New York men's tennis team fell to 69th-ranked Central Florida Sunday Morning on day three of the Army Kickoff at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center. The Knights (5-4) claimed a 4-0 victory over the Bulls (4-3) while playing a clinch/clinch format.
"It's been a broken record this spring, but we just aren't good enough at doubles," said head coach Lee Nickell. "We continue to compete with passion and energy, but we just aren't at the level to beat a good team like UCF yet. We will strive to get better this week as we prepare to play a very good Cleveland State team this weekend."
Sophomore Jonathan Hannestad and junior Sergio Arevalillo teamed together at second doubles to edge the Knights, 6-4. Junior Akhil Mehta and freshman Noah Hajdu-Andersson battled, but suffered a 7-6 setback at the third position.
UB dropped a trio of singles matches, while the other three went unfinished. Junoir Pablo Alvarez forced a three-setter, but fell to Inaki Espindola, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 at third singles. Arevalillo dropped the fourth singles match 6-2, 6-3 to Chris Barrus and Amar Hromic fell to Mariano Porter 6-4, 6-4 at the fifth spot.
In the clinch/clinch format, the winner of two out of three doubles matches wins the doubles point. The winner of four points total, doubles and singles combined, wins the match.
The Bulls return to the court on Saturday, Feb. 7 traveling to Cleveland State for a 6 pm match.
