BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo, the State University of New York women's basketball team travels to Long Island to face the Hofstra Pride hoping to extend their undefeated streak coming off a couple of statement wins.
UB entered the University of Central Florida Thanksgiving Holiday Tournament last weekend with something to prove: sure, they were 4-0, but can their smothering defense withstand the athletes from UCF and Clemson?
Those questions were answered after a 66-60 victory over the Knights followed less than 24 hours later with a convincing 61-51 defeat of the Tigers who compete in arguably the most stacked conference in all of women's college basketball, the ACC.
Now, with a 6-0 start and the nation's second-ranked defense entering this week, the Bulls turn their attention to the Hofstra Pride with the goal of 7-0 - a mark the program hasn't seen since the 2000-01 season.
This will be the ninth meeting between the two schools. UB owns the all-time series - which goes back to the 1991-92 season when both teams were members of the East Coast Conference - 5-3. Hofstra has won the previous three meetings, most recently on Long Island in 2009.
The Pride, which like UB qualified for the WNIT last season, is also off a solid start with wins over Navy, Stony Brook, American, Fairfield and Coastal Carolina. Three players are averaging double figures led by Kelly Loftus's 12.8 average; teammate Ashunae Durant is a double-double threat averaging 11.5 points and 9.5 boards.
Tip is 7 p.m. Thursday from Hempstead. Join me for the pre-game show at 6:30 on Buffalo's ESPN 1520 or streaming online.
