BUFFALO, NY - University at Buffalo, State University of New York cross country and track & field director and head coach Vicki Mitchell announced the signing of two student-athletes to National Letters of Intent on Tuesday.
Mitchell is excited to welcome both Sam Wary and Kevin Hazelwood to the Bulls track and field program. Both will look to succeed under Buffalo's successful and experienced coaching staff.
"We are excited to welcome both Kevin Hazelwood and Sam Wray to the UB Bulls family, Mitchell said. "Kevin will bring in versatility in the distance events, adding depth to our strong men's distance program. Coach Witzleben's program will accel Kevin to new levels. Sam is one of the top 5 male throwing seniors in the country. With coach Garnham's skills, he will develop and add to the tradition of throwing dominance at the University at Buffalo."
Wray is the defending New York State Champion and NYS Federation Champion in the Discus, the 2015 Buffalo New Prep Player of the year, and All-American. Sam broke the 14-year old WNY High School discus record, throwing 193'08", which was previously held by former UB track athlete and All-American Sheldon Battle.
Hazelwood will compete in distance events on the track and field and will also be a member of the men's cross country team. Associate head coach and men's cross country coach Todd Witzleben is impressed with Hazelwood throughout his high school meets and sees potential in the Brewster, NY native.
"From our first opportunity to talk, I knew Kevin would be a fit for the University at Buffalo, both athletically and academically, Witzleben explained."He'll have to adapt to a new level of training next year, but he already shares our level of expectation. It will be fun to watch him develop"
The Bulls hope to add to their roster for next year during the following signing period.
