CANTON, OH - The UB men's and women's cross country teams competed at the 2015 MAC Championships on Sunday. On the course at Canton GlenOak Community Park, Amy Shaw and Cameron Bruce each earned All-MAC Second Team, respectively. Bruce finished in 11th place with a time of 25:01.5. Shaw ran the 6 k course in a time of 21:37.2, which was fast enough for a 13th place.
Both athletes paced their respective teams throughout the race. The men finished in sixth place with 150 points. In the women's race, Buffalo raced to a fifth-place finish with 134 team points.
This year's team finish was only one spot short of their program-best finish of fourth place, which they achieved in 2004, and comes after finishing fifth place at MAC Championships the last three years. Overall, the Bulls had two top-20 finishers and five of their runners finished in the top 50. Corinne Birchard complemented Shaw's team-best finish with a time of 21:57.7 for a 19th-place finish. Chardae Henry, Melinda Wheeler, and Meagan Hopkins rounded on UB's team score by finishing in 35th, 42nd, and 46th, respectively. The team's top-five runners finished less than apart from each other.
On the men's side, Bruce led UB with his a career-best 11th-place finish and improves on finishing in 20th at last year's MAC Championships. Adam Hunt impressed with his top-30 finish and second-best team time of 25:46.6. Tyler Scheving ran closely behind Hunt to finish in 32nd and only four seconds slower. Justin Van Epps and Derek Palafox round out the Bulls' top-five finishers with 39th and 43rd place finishes. They ran the 8 k course with times of 25:58.7 and 26:04.7, respectively.
The Bulls will next compete at the NCAA Northeast Regionals on Friday, November 13. Unlike MAC Championships that allow teams to take their top-nine runners, teams can only bring their top-seven runners to NCAA Regionals.
The MAC announced Coach of the Year, Freshman of the Year, and All-MAC First and Second Team honors at the conclusion of Saturday's event. Below is the winners of those awards with UB student-athletes in bold.
