Cross Country Teams Run to Top-Ten Finishes at Lehigh Paul Short Invitational

BETHLEHEM, PA – The University at Buffalo, State University of New York men's and women's cross country teams competed at the 42nd annual Lehigh Paul Short Invitational on Friday. The men's team had particpants in both the open and gold races, while the women's team ran in the gold race.
The Bulls impressed in the men's gold race finishing in fourth place with 176 points. Their first seven runners, which account towards the team score, all finished within 33 seconds of each other. Jack Jibb paced the group with a time of 24:38. Andrew Berge and Barrett Kemp finished two and three seconds behind Jibb, respectively. Cameron Bruce, Derek Palafox, Justin Van Epps, and Craig Kaiser all finished with times under 26 minutes. UB's finish is ever more impressive when considereing that first-place Georgetown and second-place Villanova are both nationally ranked and each had three runners finish in the top-10 of the event.
Outside of the Bulls seven-best runners, freshmen Adam Hunt and Dan Muldoon finished the course in a time of 25:40 and 25:49. Dylan Servos ran under 26 minutes as well.
On the women's side, UB finished in eighth place out of 35 teams. The Bulls' top-seven runners finished within 1:20 of each other. Chardae Henry led the way with a time of 21:25 and a 38th place finish with Corinne Birchard finishing three seconds later in 45th place. Amy Shaw, Morgan Mahoney, Meagan Hopkins, and Rachel Barich rounded out the scoring for Buffalo with times all under 22:05 and a six-minute mile pace.
In the men's open race, the Bulls had four runners compete. Senior Tyler Scheving led the way with a time of 25:48 in the 8k race with fellow senior Frankie Pfeil finishing in a time of 26:10 to finish in 36th place. Freshman Itai Bezherano placed 51st with a time of 26:28, which was one second off a top 50 finish. With a time of 27:26 and finishing 143rd out of 318 runners, Seamus Degan rounded out the Bulls runners in the men's open race of the Paul Short Invitational.
The Bulls will have a week off from competition before competiting at pre-nationals at the University of Louisville as well as competing in the Canisius Alumni Classic next Saturday.
