
Swimming and Diving Splits Dual Meet with Miami (OH)

OXFORD, OH – The University at Buffalo, the State University at New York men's swimming and diving team opened Mid-American Conference action with an impressive, 168-132, win over Miami (OH) at the Nixon Aquatic Center on Friday afternoon. The women's team fell to the RedHawks, 182.5-117.5.
The men, who defeated Miami for the sixth straight season, were led by Charles Barry and Scott Huang who each won two individual events. Barry won the 1,000 freestyle with a season-best time of 9:32.27. He finished over eight seconds ahead of teammate Reid Zyniecki who placed second. The Hartsdale, NY native also won the 200 backstroke in 1:52.18.
Huang won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:06.80, barely edging out teammate Garrett Clarke who finished in 2:06.84. Huang was also victorious in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:54.86 – his best time of the season.
Huang also posted a second place finish in the 100 breaststroke, finishing behind UB freshman Itai De La Vega who won the race with a time of 56.46.
Other individual winners for the men were Zyniecki (500 freestyle), Billy Patrum (200 butterfly) and Oliver Patrouch (100 butterfly).
The team of Eric Jensen, De La Vega, Patrouch and Antonio Lanzi won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:32.45.
Cade Bennett led the UB divers with a second-place finish on the one-meter board (272.77) and a third on the three-meter (277.58).
Once again, the women were paced by the duo of Jessica Powers and Megan Burns. Each stayed perfect on the season in their respective events.
Powers won the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 10:17.62 – shattering her previous season-best time by nearly seven seconds. Powers finished four seconds ahead of teammate Hannah Miller who took second. Powers also posted a season-best time of 5:02.79 to win the 500 freestyle. Spencer Rodriguez swam a strong race to finish second in 5:04.40.
Burns won the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.49. The Rochester, NY native also won the 100 freestyle with a time of 50.97.
Taylor Steffl won the 100 butterfly in a time of 57.87. She also posted a second-place finish in the 50 freestyle.
The Bulls will next travel to Eastern Michigan to face the Eagles on January 24.
