Cross Country Teams Race to Runner-Up Finishes at UB Stampede

GRAND ISLAND, NY – The University at Buffalo cross country teams hosted their lone home meet of 2014, the UB Stampede, Saturday at Beaver Island State Park. UB placed second to Pittsburgh in both the men's eight-kilometer race and the women's 5K.
The men trailed Pittsburgh by just eight points, tallying 32 during the meet. The Bulls were paced by junior Cameron Bruce with a runner-up finish of 25:28.90 out of 42 runners. Rookie Andrew Berge placed fourth in his collegiate debut with a 25:32.90 finish. Sophomore Alec Peinkofer and junior Brian Crimmins ran consecutively to place seventh and eighth with times of 25:53.50 and 26:05.00, respectively. Junior Austin Coneys was the fifth Bull to finish, placing 11th in 26:23.80. Sophomore Barrett Kemp and junior Tyler Scheving closed out UB's top seven. Kemp crossed the finish line 15th in 27:02.90, while Scheving ran 19th with a 27:25.30 finish.
"I'm happy with the meet today," said Todd Witzleben, associate head coach for men's cross country. "We'll need to tighten our top five as our season progresses. I'm excited to bring the whole team together in two weeks at Iona."
The women's squad tallied 46 points on the course. Sophomore Corinne Birchard was the first of four consecutive UB finishers, placing seventh out of 59 competitors. Birchard raced to a finish of 18:45.40. Classmate Melinda Wheeler followed with an 18:49.40 finish, rookie Amy Shaw was next in 19:01.60 and sophomore Meagan Hopkins ran 10th in 19:05.70. Senior Chrissy Clarkin was Buffalo's fifth finisher with a 12th-place showing of 19:11.20. Junior Maggie Russell and senior Meaghan Wessel rounded out the Bulls' top seven placing 15th and 17th clocking in at 19:17.90 and 19:33.00.
"Pittsburgh is a strong team and brought great competition, adding quality to the race," said director and head coach Vicki Mitchell. "I'm pleased that the women moved well over the second half. It's been a strength of ours."
Following the race, an awards ceremony was held featuring senior recognition for four UB runners in Clarkin, Gabby Leo, Meghan Manley and Wessel.
