WILLIAMSVILLE, NY - In a match that lasted well over four hours, the University at Buffalo women's tennis team lost 4-3 to Ball State in its final home match of the season. For the first time in conference play UB dropped the doubles points and fell to 12-4 on the year and 3-2 in MAC play.
The Cardinals took the doubles point as two of the three matches went into tiebreakers. Ball State won at third doubles before the Bulls took the victory at second doubles, 8-7 (7-3). The Cardinals clinched the point with an 8-4 win at first doubles.
UB fought hard in singles as the teams managed to split the six matches, with four of them going into third sets. UB picked up two easy victories as Marta Stoyanova won 6-2, 6-1 at six and Anamaria Candanoza won 6-3, 6-4 at five, giving the Bulls a 2-1 lead in the match. UB held that advantage for a little while as the remaining four matches all went into a third set. Ball State tied the match up with a victory at one, but then Buffalo regained the edge with a 5-7, 7-5, 6-2 win by Laura Fernandez at third singles.
The Bulls needed just one more victory as both second and fourth singles moved into third-set tiebreakers. The Cardinals tied the match up with a 7-3 tiebreaker win at four and then went on to win a 7-4 tiebreaker at second singles to take the match.
