Bulls Open Road Swing With 5-2 Win At Western Michigan

KALAMAZOO, MI - The University at Buffalo women's tennis team began its regular-season concluding three-match road trip on a positive note Friday afternoon as the Bulls defeated Western Michigan, 5-2. UB was strong in singles play, winning all, but one match after dropping the doubles point. The Bulls improve to 13-4 on the year and 4-2 in conference play.
The Broncos took the doubles point as they won at second doubles, 8-2. A close match at first doubles also went WMU's way, 8-5, putting an end to the doubles competition before third doubles could conclude. Freshmen Margarita Kotok and Laura Holterbosch were locked in a tight one, 6-6, when doubles ended.
Singles was a different story for the Bulls as they took five of the six contests. An injury default gave the Bulls a victory at second singles and then senior Marta Stoyanova kept up her strong play as she won at sixth singles, 6-3, 6-4. The remaining four matches all went three sets with the Broncos tying the match up 2-2 with a victory at one.
However, senior Anamaria Candanoza won at fifth singles, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 and then Kotok clinched the match with a 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 victory at four. Junior Laura Fernandez won her match at three, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).
"The girls battled really hard today and after doubles they came out strong and focused in singles and it was really awesome to see," said head coach Kristen Maines. "A bunch of the three-set matches could have gone either way today, but our players had more fire out on the court."
The Bulls will remain on the road tomorrow as they head to Bowling Green. Match will begin at 1:00 pm.
