Bulls Advance To MAC Semifinals With 4-1 Win Over Toledo

HAMILTON, OH - A dominating performance in singles by the University at Buffalo women's tennis team propelled the Bulls to a 4-1 victory on Friday morning over Toledo in the Mid-American Conference Quarterfinals. The Bulls advance to their first semifinals since the 2009-10 season.
Toledo looked impressive in doubles action as the Rockets picked up an 8-1 victory at one and an 8-7 (7-5) victory at two, to take an early 1-0 lead in the match. However, the Bulls looked like a totally different team in singles, winning the first set in all six matches.
The run began with freshman Margarita Kotok, who had little trouble winning her match at fourth singles, 6-1, 6-2. Senior Marta Stoyanova then won at sixth singles, 6-3, 6-2, while fellow senior Miranda Podlas won at second singles, 6-3, 6-1. Those victories staked the Bulls to a 3-1 lead. Senior Anamaria Candanoza put an exclamation point on the morning as she used a service ace to clinch her match, 6-4, 6-4, and send the Bulls to victory.
Both senior Tanvi Shah and junior Laura Fernandez won first sets 7-5 at one and three, respectively, before having their matches stopped after the Bulls clinched.
The Bulls will meet the top seed and tournament host, Miami on Saturday morning at 10:00am with the winner advancing to Sunday's Mid-American Conference Championship match.
