DELAND, FL – The University at Buffalo softball team lost a late lead on Wednesday evening as the host Stetson Hatters scored five runs in the sixth inning to defeat the Bulls, 6-5, at Patricia Wilson Stadium. The Bulls are now 13-12 on the year.

UB got off to a quick start to the contest as it scored four runs in the top of the first. The Bulls put the first three on base as a single from senior Sammi Gallardo scored the first run of the ball game. A groundout from senior Heather Ryder scored the second UB run, with the third coming on a Stetson error. A single to left field from junior Karly Nevez completed the scoring in the inning.

The Bulls extended their lead in the third inning as senior Holly Luciano opened the frame with a single to center field. She came in to score on a ground out from Nevez.

The Hatters got on the board with one in the bottom of the third, but broke the game open with five runs in the sixth, which began on back-to-back home runs.

"We swung the bats well early on and put up four runs in the first inning," said head coach Trena Peel. "We didn't make the plays defensively in the sixth to close it out. You can't give great teams five outs in an inning. Mental errors defensively hurt us."

The Bulls had seven hits as a team led by two-hit games from Gallardo and Luciano. Nevez drove in a pair of runs, while Gallardo and Ryder also had runs driven in.

Speckman picked up the loss to move her record to 9-6 on the season. She allowed 11 hits, while striking out five batters. She was charged with four of the six Stetson runs.

Meredith Owen picked up the win for Stetson as she improved to 10-3 on the year.

The Bulls will play a pair of games at Florida A&M on Friday beginning at 4:00 pm.
