UB Runners Finish Second At Season Opening Harry Lang Invitational

HAMILTON, NY – The University at Buffalo men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2013 season at Colgate University's Harry Lang Invitational with second-place finishes among four teams.
In the men's race, contested at 6,400 meters, the Bulls scored 60 points. Syracuse was the lone team to finish ahead of the Bulls with 15 points. Buffalo beat out the likes of Colgate and Hartwick College.
Leading the men's team individually was sophomore Austin Coneys with a 12th-place finish among 43 entrants. Coneys turned in a course time of 20:50.60.
Besides Coneys, five other Bulls finished among the top 25. Sophomore Martin Leff finished 13th in 21:01. Bobby Swick was 14th in 21:16 with Tyler Scheving finishing 21st in 21:48, Nate Smith finishing 22nd in 21:51 and Graeme Gowland finishing in 25th in 22:05.70.
Syracuse's Juris Silenieks won the individual title in 20:33 with 10 of his fellow Syracuse runners following him, earning the top 11 spots for the race.
In the women's meet, run at 4,200 meters, the Bulls totaled 42 points to finish second behind Syracuse who recorded 22 points.
UB's top women's runner was junior Chrissy Clarkin, who took 2nd place in 15:47.20. Joining Clarkin as UB's next four finishers were junior Gabby Leo in 15:55 for 4th place, freshman Melinda Wheeler in 16:18.20 for 9th place, Meagan Hopkins in 16:36.70 for 13th place and freshman Corinne Birchard in 16:45 for 14th place.
Syracuse's Margo Malone won the race in 15:39.30 barely edging out Clarkin. Syracuse had six of the top eight times on the day with the other two top eight times belonging to the Bulls.
The Bulls host the UB Stampede Invitational at Grand Island's Beaver Island State Park on September 21 in their next competition.
