BUFFALO, NY - Despite constant pressure from the Duquesne attack, the Buffalo women's soccer team (2-1-2) stood firm and earned their second-straight scoreless tie. Senior goalkeeper Ainsley Wheldon came up with seven huge saves for the Bulls, producing her third straight shutout.
"We had a lot of players receive a lot of minutes tonight and I believe we had some young players really step up and play well for us," said head coach Michael Thomas. "I really think we saw some kids grow up today, which was fun to see."
As the rain began to fall in the first half, the two teams went back and forth, exchanging scoring opportunities. Both Wheldon and Devon Tabata stood tall in the opening 45 minutes, not allowing a goal.
The second half was dominated by the Dukes as they owned the 9-4 advantage in shots, but they were still unable to get a shot past Wheldon.
After holding off the Dukes for the first 100 minutes, Buffalo proved its fitness in the final overtime period, just missing on three shots and earning a corner kick while keeping Duquesne at bay. Karen McMahon's shot went wide and Megan Abman and Jackie Hall saw both of their attempts sail wide of the goal as well. Wheldon was not tested in the overtime period as the defenders in front of her, Courtney Gross, Natalie Jurisevic and Kristin Markiewicz shutdown the Dukes attack, earning their third-straight game, not allowing a goal.
Leading the Bulls offense were Jackie Hall and McMahon who each recorded five shots in the game. The shutout for Wheldon was her third straight and 18th in her career, just three behind the schools all-time record.
The Bulls will return home on Sunday at 11:15 am as they play host to Austin Peay. Before Sunday's non-conference affair, Buffalo will be honoring their five seniors as a part of Senior Day at UB Stadium.
