BUFFALO, NY – New softball head coach Trena Peel has began to assemble her staff, naming Horace Smith III assistant coach. Smith coached on Peel's staff at Hampton last season.
"I'm excited to have my right-hand man, Coach Smith with me here at UB," said Peel. "He was a huge asset to my coaching staff last year. He did an excellent job running my strength & conditioning program, outfield, and assisted with hitting. His youth and attention to detail will assist me in changing the culture of UB softball into a winning tradition"
In his lone season with the Pirates, Smith helped the team to a 34-26 record and a MEAC Conference Championship, which sent Hampton to its first NCAA Tournament since 1996.
Prior to coaching at Hampton, Smith was a pitcher and captain of the Norfolk State baseball team. He also served as a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). He graduated from Norfolk State with a bachelor's in Exercise Science, specializing in Kinesiotherapy.
Smith is a native of Emporia, Va. where he attended Greensville County High School and was an all-district player in football, basketball, and baseball. He was named Region I Male Athlete of the Year in 2007.
