Bulls Sweep Series From Eastern Michigan With 5-3 Win

YPSILANTI, MI - The University at Buffalo softball team picked up its second straight road victory on Sunday afternoon, sweeping a two-game series from Eastern Michigan with a 5-3 victory. The win improves UB's conference record to 3-5.
The Bulls got out to a quick start, making the Eagles pay for a leadoff walk to Sammi Gallardo. She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and third on a single from Alyssa Ward. Gallardo then came in to score on a sacrifice fly from junior Heather Ryder.
UB tacked on a second run in the top of the second as senior Jessica Griffin began her three-hit day with a home run to center field. The Eagles loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom half of the second, but the Bulls limited the damage to just one run, although EMU did eventually tie it up in the bottom of the third.
Both teams went scoreless in the fourth inning, but the Bulls regained the lead in the top of the fifth. Freshman Anissa Pinedo hit a one-out double down the right field line and was replaced on the bases by junior Holly Luciano, who came in to score on another base hit from Griffin.
Buffalo added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning as Ward singled in a run and a second came in to score on a wild pitch, giving the Bulls a 5-2 lead. The Eagles made one last charge in the bottom of the seventh inning against junior Tori Speckman as they loaded the bases with two out. Eastern Michigan scored one run on a single, but Speckman was able to record the final out on her third strikeout of the day.
"It was great to take the momentum from yesterday and use it to get a big road win this afternoon," said head coach Jen Teague. "Our offense has really picked up these last two games and it will be important for us to keep it going the rest of the way."
Speckman picked up her fourth win of the season as she pitched 4.1 innings of relief. Griffin and Ward both had three-hit days offensively, Pinedo also had a multi-hit game with two.
The Bulls step out of conference play on Tuesday afternoon as they head north to Niagara for a pair of games beginning at 3:00 pm.
