Bulls Conclude Home Schedule With Shutout Of Crosstown Rival Canisius

BUFFALO, NY - Junior pitcher Tori Speckman threw a complete game three-hit shutout and freshman Anissa Pinedo hit her first career home run as the University at Buffalo softball team shutout Canisius, 3-0. The victory improved Buffalo to 13-26 on the season, while Canisius fell to 21-17.
Speckman was outstanding for much of the afternoon allowing just one hit over the first six innings and that came on an infield single to third. The Bulls picked up their first two runs in the bottom of the second as the inning was kept going following an error by the Canisius short stop. With two outs in the inning, senior Jessica Griffin doubled to left field and came in to score as freshman Ryleigh Fitzgerald hit a ground ball to short, which was bobbled by the fielder, scoring a run. While the inning should have ended with out a run, UB now had a runner at first and she came in to score on a triple to right field from junior Holly Luciano.
After retiring the first six batters, Canisius got its first hit in the top of the third, but Speckman than retired 13 of the next 14 Canisius batters, leading into the seventh innings where she had a 3-0 lead thanks to Pinedo, who led off the bottom of the sixth with a long home run to center field.
Speckman than ran into some trouble in the seventh after getting the first out as back-to-back singles and a walk loaded the bases for Canisius. She pitched out of the jam thought as a fly out to center field and a pop up to second base retired the side and preserved the victory.
"We got some timely hitting when we need to this afternoon," said head coach Jen Teague. "We got some solid defense and a three-hitter from Tori Speckman and when we can put hitting, pitching and defense together we win games."
The victory for Speckman is her eighth of the season as she allowed just three hits and two walks, while striking out seven. UB had seven hits, including two-hit games from Pinedo and Griffin.
The Bulls and Griffs will face off one more time tomorrow at Canisius with first pitch set for 4:00 pm.
