WILLIAMSVILLE, NY – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team remained unbeaten in Mid-American Conference play as the Bulls defeated league rival Chicago State, 7-0, Friday morning at the Miller Tennis Center. The Bulls (9-6, 3-0 MAC) swept all nine matches against the Cougars (1-20, 0-3 MAC) to secure their third straight victory, all within the league.
UB opened play with wins in all three doubles matches to earn the first point. At first doubles, Damien David and Ashwin Sharma scored an 8-3 win over Sergiu Muresan and Mario Noboa. The Bulls clinched the point with a win at third doubles as Akhil Mehta and Nick Sarles knocked off Rashley Yeremia and Luis Ulloa, 8-5. The Bulls also scored a win in the second doubles match with Vusa Hove and Yevgeniy Jason Shkodnik winning a 7-3 tiebreaker.
Commenting on clinching the all-important doubles point, head coach Lee Nickell said, "It's been successful today, but we've got to find ways to stay on top at the net. We're still not where we want to be in doubles."
The Bulls swept the singles matches with all six wins coming in straight sets. Vusa Hove won his 70th singles match of his career, moving past Nick Zieziula into sole possession of second place on the all-time singles win list. Hove downed Muresan, 6-2, 6-1, as his was the third match to finish, clinching the necessary fourth point to give the Bulls the victory.
Also scoring singles wins were David, at number two, Pablo Alvarez at number three, Sergio Arevalillo, at number four, Sharma, at number five and Mehta, at number six.
Buffalo steps out of conference on Sunday for a road match at America East power Binghamton before completing the regular season next weekend with home league contests against Ball State and Northern Illinois.
Nickell commented on the Binghamton match. "It will be a tough fight for us. We have to be ready."
