BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo cross country teams are set for their final team meet of the season on Friday afternoon as they head to the NCAA Northeastern Regional Championships, being held in the Bronx, New York At Van Corlandt Park.
The men's team enters the NCAA's with high hopes following a great individual performance from senior team captain Zach Ahart. Ahart became the first UB male cross country runner to earn a individual MAC Championship last time out. The Wheatfield, NY native dominated the field en route to the title, beating the second place finisher by seven seconds in the process.
Ahart is joined by a solid group of underclassmen that will look to make a splash at the NCAA's this season. The young UB squad will be looking for major contributions from Cameron Bruce, Alec Peinkofer, Barrett Kemp and Pier Berkmans this week.
On the women's side, freshman Caroline Brown has been a pleasant surprise as she earned the team's best overall finish at the MAC Championships, taking home 25th place in 22:07. Junior Gabby Leo has been a consistent runner all season long, earning a 40th place finish last time out, and she will be looked at to lead the young and energetic women's squad.
Other key runners for the UB women's team that took home a 7th place overall finish at the MAC Championships will be Chrissy Clarkin, Hilary Swartwood, Meagan Hopkins and Kaitlin McCadden.
The men's program will be looking to improve on their 16th place finish at the NCAA's last season while the women will aim to build on their performance last season at this event. The women picked up a 15th place finish, their best finish since the 2006 season.
