BUFFALO, NY- Following a weekend of school-record performances, the University at Buffalo volleyball team swept the MAC East Player of the Week honors as sophomore Tahleia Bishop was named the offensive player and senior libero Kelly Svoboda was named defensive player of the week for the second straight week.
Bishop led the Bulls offensively this weekend, picking up her two highest kill totals in her two years in a UB uniform. Bishop began her weekend with a career-high 26 kills in a five set loss at Akron. Bishop took a career-high 69 swings, while also contributing defensively with three total blocks. In the five-set match against Toledo, Bishop finished with 25 kills, playing in just half of the rotations as the team's right side. She had just five errors on a 58 swings for a hitting percentage of .345. She also added a block in the match. Bishop now has 365 kills on the year, over 100 more than the next person on the Bulls. Her 3.61 kills per set are amongst tops in the conference.
Kelly Svoboda averaged 7.00 digs per set this weekend as she had a record-breaking night for the Bulls against Toledo. Svoboda reached a new career-high and UB Division I single-match record with 43 digs in a tough five-set loss to the Rockets. The 43 digs were the most by a MAC player since 2010 and it help propel her to four different records on the night. In addition to the career-high and single-game mark, the 43 digs gave Svoboda 580 for the season, breaking the UB single-season record. The senior also set the UB career digging mark, which has stood since 2007 as she now has 1,889 for her career. Svoboda got closer to the single-match and career records on Thursday night when she had 27 digs against Akron. For the season, Svoboda is averaging 5.74 digs per set, which would shatter the UB single-season record by more than a dig per set. It currently leads the MAC and is among the top 10 totals in the nation.
This is the fourth time this season that Svoboda has been named the MAC East Defensive Player of the Week. For Bishop, this is her first weekly honor of the season.
The Bulls will wrap up the regular season this weekend beginning on Friday night against Miami. The Bulls will have Senior Day on Saturday night.
