
Bulls Earn Tough Four-Set Win At Miami (OH)

OXFORD, OH – The University at Buffalo volleyball team was able to overcome a tough five-set loss from last night as the Bulls went into Miami (OH) and defeated the RedHawks, 3-1. The win is UB's 15th of the season and evens its MAC record up at 3-3.
The Bulls took the contest 10-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-17 as they picked up their defensive effort, holding Miami to just a .104 hitting mark. Early on though, it looked like Miami had all the momentum as it hit .462 and won the opening set, 25-10.
However, the Bulls were able to regroup and began with a victory in the second set. Buffalo opened the second set on a 9-2 run and led by as much as 16-7 before Miami came back to pull within 18-15. UB was able to hold on for the 25-22 win.
The Bulls led through out the third set, getting their lead up to 19-12 on a kill from junior Liz Scott. Miami pulled within 24-21 late in the set, but another kill from Scott clinched the set for UB and gave it a 2-1 lead in the match.
With the fourth set tied 4-4 early, UB went on a set-changing 8-1 run, which included a couple of blocks from the nation's second best blocking unit. The Bulls increased their lead to 20-8 and held on for the 25-17 win.
"I am very proud of our entire team tonight," said head coach Todd Kress. "After a very tough loss last night, we showed great resiliency and character to come back and beat a very good Miami team. These kind of gut check wins can go a long way in redefining our season."
Sophomore Tahleia Bishop led the way with a team-high 18 kills and just three errors as she hit .455 on the night. Bishop also added 10 digs. Scott added 10 kills and senior Kaja Shirmer had five. Senior Dani Reinert had 21 assists, while junior Taylor Pritchett added 20.
Defensively, senior Kelly Svoboda finished with a match-high 23 digs, while Bishop was the only other player in double figures. The Bulls had 9.0 total blocks, led by five from senior Carissa McKenna. Sophomore Amber Hatchett added three.
The Bulls will return back to Alumni Arena this upcoming weekend beginning with a match Friday night against Northern Illinois.
