Bulls Open 2012 Campaign at Colgate's Harry Lang Meet
Both of the University at Buffalo's cross country teams opened the 2012 season at Colgate University's Harry Lang Invitational with fourth-place finishes among 11 teams. In the men's race, contested at 6,400 meters, the Bulls, ranked 11th in the Northeast Region by the USTFCCCA scored 118 points. Syracuse (22), Navy (56) and American (78), all regionally ranked, finished ahead of the Bulls. In the women's meet, run at 4,200 meters, the Bulls totaled 111 points to finish fourth behind Syracuse (24), Bucknell (60) and Navy (67).
Ahart Tops Men's Competitors
Leading the men's team individually at the Harry Lang meet was junior Zach Ahart with a 14th-place finish among 106 entrants. Ahart turned in a course time of 20:36. Besides Ahart, four other Bulls finished among the top 35. Sophomore Alex Saavedra finished 20th in 20:50. Isaac Hagen was 31st in 21:16 with Tyler Murtha finishing 33rd in 21:19 and freshman Brian Crimmins taking 35th place in 21:21. American's John Pope won the individual title in 20:03 with Syracuse runners taking the next four slots.
Leo Leads Women's Squad
UB's top women's runner on Saturday was sophomore Gabby Leo, who took 13th place among 110 entrants in 16:47. Joining Leo as UB's next four finishers were freshman Kaitlin McCadden in 16:55 for 19th place, senior Sam Beim in 17:01 for 23rd place, senior Emma Denton in 17:06 for 28th place and senior Caitlin Curry in 17:11 for 31st place. Navy's Annie-Norah Beveridge won the race in 15:51 with Syracuse racers taking the next four positions.
UB Stampede Coming to Beaver Island
After taking the upcoming week off from competition, UB hosts the annual UB Stampede meet on Saturday, September 15 at Beaver Island State Park on Grand Island. The women's 5K race will begin at noon with the men's 8K race to follow at 12:45 pm. Both teams won last year's meet as the UB women scored 16 points to defeat California University of Pennsylvania (52) with Rochester, St. Bonaventure and Geneseo State also participating. The UB men collected 21 points to easily outdistance second-place Rochester's 53. Zach Ahart finished second in 25:07.9 as UB's top individual with Alex Saavedra third in 25:08.9. In the women's 6K race, the Bulls posted six of the top eight finishers, including the first four across the line. Katie Sanders led the Bulls as the only individual to finish under 19 minutes (18:57). Gabby Leo was second in 19:04 and Jackie Cavalluzzo and Caitlin Curry took third and fourth, respectively, with both crossing the finish line in 19:06.
