WACO, TX – Behind a complete game two-hitter from senior Holly Johnson, the University at Buffalo softball team defeated Baylor, ranked by some as high as 15th in the country, 1-0, at Getterman Stadium. The victory improves UB's record to 7-12 on the year.
Both the Bulls and Bears got outstanding starting pitching as each matched zeros on the board through the first four innings before Baylor went to the bullpen prior to the fifth. The two teams pitched scoreless innings in the fifth as well, but the Bulls finally broke through in the top of the sixth.
Sophomore Holly Luciano reached base on a one-out infield single and was driven in on a long double by Alyssa Ward to left field. Ward was thrown out trying to stretch it out to a triple.
With the way Johnson was pitching, the one run was enough. She retired the side in order in the sixth and allowed a two-out walk in the seventh, but got the final batter to fly out to left field.
The win for Johnson was her second of the season as she allowed just two hits and two walks, while striking out two batters. The Baylor pitching staff allowed just three hits, with two of them coming in that fifth inning. The other hit was a single to left field from sophomore Sammi Gallardo in the second inning.
"We've played really well over the last four games and it culminated with today's victory," said head coach Jen Teague. "I'm pleased with our consistency and the progression we are making as a team. We've continued to trust the process and gain some momentum as we get ready to begin conference play."
The Bulls are now off until they open the home portion of their season on March 28 against Canisius at 4:00 pm.
