BUFFALO, NY – After playing the first 18 games of the season away from home, the University at Buffalo softball team will have its home opener on Wednesday afternoon against Canisius at 4:00 pm. It will be the first of five home games for Buffalo this week.
The Bulls, who are 7-11 on the year, have not played since defeating Baylor, 1-0, on March 17. It was by far the biggest win for the Bulls this season as Baylor was ranked 15th in the nation at the time of the game. The Bulls are currently being led offensively by a pair of sophomores as Holly Luciano is batting .306 on the year and Sammi Gallardo is hitting an even .300. In the circle, Holly Johnson, who has a 3.86 ERA after pitching that complete game two hitter against Baylor, leads the Bulls. Sophomore Tori Speckman has also been impressive with five wins to date.
Canisius enters Wednesday's contests with a 4-19 record after dropping a pair of one-run games against Colgate and Syracuse on Saturday. Lizzy Gatto leads the Griffs with a .339 batting average and Corrine Schaus has a team-best 2.76 ERA.
This weekend, UB will step into Mid-American Conference play for the first time beginning with a doubleheader against Eastern Michigan on Friday afternoon. The Bulls will then host Central Michigan in singles games on Saturday and Sunday.
