WEXFORD, PA – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team rolled to a 7-0 win over Duquesne at the Oxford Athletic Club on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Bulls improved to 3-7 while dropping the Dukes to 10-5.
The Bulls scored the opening doubles point with a sweep of all three matches. At number one, Damien David and Vusa Hove downed Max Rubin and Rich Robbie, 8-6. Wojciech Starakiewicz teamed with Travis Zappia at number two to knock off Aram Abgaryan and Alex Alernan, 8-6. The number three duo of Alex Kalinin and Yevgeniy Jason Shkodnik had a relatively easier time in disposing of Ben Klaas and Mehdi Mekaoui by an 8-3 margin.
UB also swept the singles matches although four of the matches needed to be decided in three sets. David scored his 17th singles win of the year with a victory over Abgaryan. David won a 10-8 super-tiebreaker in the third set.
Also picking up three set wins were Hove at number two, Starakiewicz at number three and Kalinin at number five. Ivan Vereshchaga won in straight sets over Aleman while Shkodnik picked up a victory as his opponent was forced to retire in the first set.
"This was a good test for our guys," said head coach Lee Nickell. "We made it a goal to start fast, which we did, but then had issues holding on to the momentum. Going from outdoors to indoors really affected our feel, but we overcame that and beat a very well coached Duquesne team."
The Bulls face St. Bonaventure on Wednesday.
