Bulls Take Advantage of Weather and Bonnies in 7-0 Win

BUFFALO, NY – A beautiful May-like day in March enabled the University at Buffalo men's tennis team to play outdoors at home for the first time this season as the Bulls defeated visiting St. Bonaventure, 7-0, at the University Tennis Club. The Bulls have now won three in a row and are 4-7 overall.
UB jumped out to quick start with three doubles victories. The number one team of Damien David and Vusa Hove knocked off Oscar Yanez and Luis Guevara, 8-1. The number two duo of Wojciech Starakiewicz and Travis Zappia downed Elliot Fanshel and Javier Ortiz, 8-5. Both duos remained undefeated in their last three matches since head coach Lee Nickell changed the doubles combinations for the Bulls while on their spring trip to South Carolina. Also picking up a win was the third doubles team of Yevgeniy Jason Shkodnik and Alex Kalinin as they defeated Miguel Suarez and Trevor Haskell, 8-2, to pick up their team-best sixth doubles win of the season.
The Bulls did not allow a set to the Bonnies (1-9) in singles play. Hove, playing at second singles, scored a "double-bagel" 6-0, 6-0 win over Guevara winning in 45 minutes. David won his 18th match of the season with a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Yanez. Ivan Vereshchaga rallied to defeat Suarez in the number four match, 6-1, 7-5, as Vereshchaga took the final three points of the final game including two double faults by Suarez when the game had reached deuce. Also picking up singles wins were Starakiewicz at number three, Kalinin at number five and Jason Simon at number six.
"We did a good job of coming out with energy in the doubles," said Nickell. "We like the way things have gone and we'll see how this weekend turns out. Marist is going to be a good match for us."
The Bulls travel to Poughkeepsie to face the Red Foxes on Saturday, March 24 at 2:30 pm.
