Swimmers Roll Past Colgate

HAMILTON, NY – The University at Buffalo men's and women's swimming and diving teams scored victories over Colgate on Friday afternoon to open a weekend road trip. The UB men defeated the Raiders, 144-74, while the women scored 132-110 victory and established four Colgate pool records.
Brittney Kuras, the Mid-American Conference's Swimmer of the Week after last week's performance against Akron, scored a pair of freestyle victories on Friday setting pool records in both races. Kuras won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:49.89 and later took the 100-yard freestyle in 51.15.
Also scoring two victories for the UB women was Jessica Powers. Powers set the Colgate pool record in the 500-yard freestyle with a 4:58.32 clocking. She earlier had won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:26.13.
Mallory Morrell broke the Colgate pool record en route to winning the women's 50-yard freestyle. Morrell won the race in 23.73. Morrell and Powers were also part of UB's victorious 400-yard freestyle relay as they combined with Alex Swies and Paula Stoddard for a win in 3:32.90.
Rachel Eckert won the women's three-meter diving competition with a six-dive total of 266.30 points.
In the men's meet, freshman Billy Patrum took a pair of events to lead the Bulls. Patrum claimed the 400-yard individual medley in 4:11.00. He later won the 200-yard butterfly in 1:56.60.
The Bulls also won three freestyle events. Mike Dugan won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:45.32. Antonio Lanzi took the 500-yard freestyle in 4:42.28. Eric Culver won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:04.26. Eric Forrester won the 200-yard backstroke in 1:56.82 UB also won the men's 400-yard medley relay as Cory Zorsch, Josh Meints, Matt Schwippert and Paul Garman combined for a 3:31.11 finish.
UB also swept the men's diving events. Shawn Hoffman won the one-meter competition with 296.55 points and Chris Iafrati won the three-meter event at 301.60.
"I am proud of the way the women competed," stated head coach Andy Bashor. "The meet came down to the last couple of events and they took the pressure as a challenge and came through."
Commenting on his men's team, Bashor said, "We had many in-season best times which I am very happy with since it was after a bus trip."
The bus trip continues as the Bulls travel to West Point to face Army at 12 pm on Saturday. "We are looking forward to tomorrow's meet against Army. They are a really good team," said Bashor. "We definitely have a challenge ahead of us tomorrow."
