Bulls Drop Tough Four-Set Match To Eastern Michigan

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo volleyball team dropped just its third home match of the season on Saturday evening, falling to Eastern Michigan, 3-1.
The Eagles took the contest 25-15, 25-22, 24-26, 25-23 as they outhit UB, .247 to .166. After a rough first set, UB was able to make it a match coming close in both the second and fourth sets. In the second set, UB had it tied up 17-16 late, but Eastern Michigan responded with four straight points to take a 21-17 lead. UB managed to get it back within two at 24-22, but an EMU kill ended the set.
The Bulls overcame the Eagles and the fire alarm in the third set as they were able to extend the match with a victory. The set was tight through out, despite a 10 minute delay early in the set when a fire alarm went off in Alumni Arena. The Eagles had their first match point at 24-23, but the Bulls were able to fight it off and score three straight points for the set.
Eastern Michigan raced out to a 20-13 lead in the fourth set, but the Bulls used some strong serving from freshman Megan Lipski and went on a 7-0 run, capped off by a kill from Carissa McKenna to tie it up at 20-20. However, Eastern Michigan scored the next two points and UB was able to pull within one at 24-23, but the Eagles got a kill from Kristen Baker to clinch the match.
"I thought we came out flat tonight and that is disappointing after the way we played last night," said head coach Todd Kress. " We spent so much energy trying to fight our way back that we just didn't have any left at the end."
For the second straight night UB had four players in double figures in kills, led by 11 from McKenna, sophomore Liz Scott and freshman Tahleia Bishop. Lipski added 10 kills and 10 digs for the double-double. Junior Dani Reinert recorded 42 assists on the evening as well as six digs and three blocks.
The Bulls were led by junior Kelly Svoboda defensively as the Cleveland, OH native finished with 22 digs, adding two service aces. Bishop and Scott each had seven digs. Akeila Lain and McKenna each had five blocks, while Reinert and Scott had three.
The Bulls remain home on Thursday night as they face the Akron Zips. Match time is set for 7:00 pm.
