Squads Earn Top 10 Placings at Princeton Invite
The University at Buffalo men's and women's cross country teams competed on Saturday at the Princeton Invitational with both teams earning top 10 finishes against strong competition. The UB men placed sixth in a 24-team field with 193 points while the UB women finished ninth among 25 squads scoring 252 points.
Pressler Paces Men's Efforts
Leading the Bulls in the men's competition was junior Mike Pressler. He was the top men's finisher as he completed the 8K course in 24:33 to finish 11th in a field of 212 individuals. Pressler's time was nearly a minute faster than his previous 8K season best of 25:28.7 when he finished fourth at the UB Stampede Invitational. Zach Ahart finished 23rd in 24:48 with Alex Saavedra taking 37th in 24:58 as both runners achieved season-best marks.
Janutol Continues to Lead Women's Runners
In the women's 6K race, Shelby Janutol finished 34th of 219 runners in 22:29. It was Janutol's third race this season as she has been the Bulls' top women's finisher in the three meets. Sam Beim was 44th in 22:40. Kaitlin McCadden finished 55th in 22:48 and Emma Denton finished 62nd in 22:54.
Open Racing Leads to Impressive Finishes
The Princeton meet also included men's and women's open races. Junior Hilary Swartwood finished second among 69 entrants in the women's 6K event in 23:20, a 44-second improvement from her pace at the Paul Short Invite two weeks before. Freshman Danielle Vazquez and senior Caitlin Curry also finished in the top 10. Vazquez placed seventh in 23:51 while Curry was ninth in 23:57. Senior Kelsey Fitzgerald finished 26th in 25:04 and sophomore Molly Halpin took 52nd place in 26:25. Freshman Graeme Gowland placed 19th of 130 in the men's 8K race in a season-best 26:26. Freshman Craig Kaiser was UB's only other men's entrant as he finished 55th in 27:20, nearly 40 seconds ahead of Paul Short finish.
Men's Team Remains Ranked
In the latest USTFCCCA regional polls, released on October 15, the UB men's team holds fast at number 12 in the Northeast Region. The Bulls started the season ranked 11th and have stood in the 12th position for the last five ranking reports, released every other week.
