BUFFALO, NY - In what was an outstanding weekend for liberos in the Mid-American Conference East Division, Buffalo junior Kelly Svoboda was one of three student-athletes named MAC East Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday afternoon. This is the second time this year that Svoboda has been named Defensive Player of the Week.
Svoboda averaged an impressive 6.71 digs per set this past weekend as the Bulls split with Miami and Bowling Green. In the loss to the Falcons, Svoboda finished with a career-high 31 digs, becoming the first UB player with more than 30 digs in a match since 2009. Svoboda actually had 29 digs through three sets in that match, including 11 in the opening set. Svoboda added 16 digs on Friday night in the win over Miami, leading all Buffalo players. She was also perfect in serve receptions this past weekend as she played all 50 balls served to her without recording an error.
Through two and a half seasons, Svoboda now has 1,104 digs in her career, which is ninth best in school history.
Svoboda and the Bulls return to action on Friday evening when they continue MAC play at Kent State.
