BUFFALO, NY – Sophomore Kelly Svoboda has been named the Mid-American Conference's Eastern Division Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday afternoon. Svoboda helped the Bulls to a 3-1 record, earning all-tournament honors at this past weekend's Blue and White Classic.
Svoboda notched 20 digs or more in three of UB's four contests this past week, averaging 5.31 digs per set. She had a career-high 28 digs in UB's five-set win over Syracuse, while adding a pair of 23-dig performances against Niagara and Cornell. Offensively, Svoboda added seven service aces, including four in the victory over Cornell.
Svoboda is currently first on the team and third in the MAC with 225 digs. Her 17 service aces are tied for the third most in the conference, helping Buffalo secure the league lead in that department. As a team the Bulls have 85 aces on the year, nine more than the second closest team.
UB will begin conference play on Thursday as it travels to Akron for a 7:00 pm contest against the Zips. The Bulls will be home on Saturday afternoon when they host Toledo at 3:00 pm.
