Rob Golabek & Kourtney Brown Named Athletes Of The Year

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo Division of Athletics announced its 2010-11 Athletes of the Year yesterday at its annual Welcome Back Picnic. Earning the honors for this past year were Kourtney Brown of the women's basketball team and Rob Golabek of the men's track and field team. Both student athletes were named All-Americans during the course of the year.
The 2010-11 Mid-American Conference Player of the Year, Brown finished her brilliant playing career by leading the MAC in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage and blocked shots. Brown is the only player in the country in the top 10 nationally in those categories as she finished the season eighth in scoring, fifth in rebounding and blocked shots and sixth in field goal percentage.
For her career, Brown finished as UB's all-time leading scorer, rebounder and shot blocker. She had 1,995 points, 1,124 rebounds and 260 blocks, which broke the Mid-American Conference record. She finished second all-time in the MAC in rebounding and is amongst the top 15 scorers in league history despite never attempting a three pointer.
Golabek made it to both the indoor and outdoor national championships last year after winning the conference title in the shot put in each season. He shattered school and conference records along the way, winning the shot put at the prestigious Texas Relays in the spring. Golabek wrapped up the season with a 12th place finish at the USTA Nationals with a personal and school-record throw of 63-9.5 (19.44m), which was second among college participants.
Golabek returns for the Bulls this year for his senior season.
Also announced at the Welcome Back Picnic was the Athletic Director's Team award, which was given to men's swimming and diving following their MAC Championship season. The Bulls dominated the three-day meet, winning eight individual championships. Buffalo also became the first team other than Miami and Eastern Michigan to win the league title since 1979.
Following the meet Andy Bashor was named MAC Coach of the Year for the third straight season.
