Javon McCrea Poised for Breakout Season According to SI.com

BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo forward Javon McCrea was selected by SportsIllustrated.com as one of five players in college basketball poised to have a breakout season in 2011-12. The website used the SI.com Breakout Sophomore Formula "to identify players who showed signs of potential stars as freshmen, but weren't on the floor for enough minutes to look like stars on a traditional stat sheet."
McCrea, the 2011 Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year, averaged 11.8 points per game while playing 53.5 percent of each game and was used on 28.5 percent of offensive possessions. The BSF calculated this as a 111.1 offensive efficiency rating. It was the third highest efficiency rating of the players selected.

Last year, the formula was rather successful, as it created a list of players, including Texas' Jordan Hamilton, who went from averaging 10 points as a freshman to averaging 18.6 points as a sophomore. Reggie Johnson of Miami (FL) went from being a seldom-used player to averaging 11.9 points and 9.6 rebounds. Villanova's Maalik Wayns doubled his scoring output to average 13.8 points per game last season.
