MT. PLEASANT, MI – The University at Buffalo softball team used a total team effort, getting solid pitching and timely hitting to defeat Central Michigan, 2-1.
The Bulls came out aggressive in the top of the first putting a run on the board. With one-out, sophomore Ashley Bertot began the rally with an infield single. She was moved to second on a single by sophomore Kristin Waldron and both runners advanced on a double steal. Following a second out, Bertot would come home to score on a passed ball.
The Chippewas tied it up in the bottom half of the first, scoring on an unearned run. Freshman Tori Speckman made her 37th appearance of the season, fifth most in school history. Speckman pitched just one-third of an inning, but was replaced by Holly Johnson due to a finger injury.
Johnson continued to pitch solid and used some great defense behind her. In the bottom of the fifth the Chippewas had runners on second and third with just one out, but freshman Holly Luciano made the play of the game, running down a fly ball in center field and throwing out the CMU base runner, who tried to advance home.
That play kept the game tied and helped The Bulls go back ahead in the top of the sixth inning as senior Alexandra Bejarano hit a long double to left field, scoring Waldron, who came home to score all the way from first base.
Johnson pitched the Bulls out of trouble in the bottom of the sixth as the Chippewas had a runner on second with just one out. Johnson got the first batter to fly out to left field and then struck out Brogan Darwin to end the inning.
The Chippewas put runners on again in the seventh, but the Bulls got another nice play from third baseman Tori Pettine, who grabbed a hot shot in the infield, but was unable to make the throw to first. However with runners at first and second and two outs, Johnson picked up her third strikeout of the game to preserve the victory.
Johnson picked up her team-leading seventh victory, allowing just one hit over 6.2 innings. Johnson did walk six batters, but got the outs when needed. Waldron went 2-for-3 in the game, while four other Bulls also recorded hits.
The victory ends the Bulls season at 12-35 and 7-13 in Mid-American Conference Play.
