BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo softball team fought cold temperatures and rain on Tuesday, but were unable to defeat Canisius, falling to the Griffs, 6-2, at the Demske Sports Complex. This was the first of two straight games against Canisius, with the second coming tomorrow at UB.
The Bulls got on the board first, putting a run up in the top of the second. UB had runners on second and third and one out when the Canisius catcher committed a throwing error, which scored freshman Tori Pettine from third base.
Canisius took the lead in the bottom half of the inning with two runs, but UB again quickly tied it up in the top of the third. Freshman Holly Luciano started off the inning with a rocket to center field, which the Canisius fielder was unable to play. Luciano was able to get all the way to third on the error. She came home to score during the next at bat as sophomore Ashley Bertot singled up the middle.
Those would be the last runs for the Bulls as Canisius scored a pair of runs in the fourth and sixth. Freshman Tori Speckman picked up the loss as she pitched four innings in relief, allowing four runs. Bertot went a perfect 2-for-2 from the plate, while five other players each had a hit.
The two teams meet again tomorrow at 4:00 pm at Nan Harvey Field. The game will be UB's StrikeOut Cancer event. The game will also be televised by Time Warner SportsNet. Live video is available on Buffalobulls.com.
