Bulls And Griffs To Strike Out Cancer

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo and Canisius College softball teams will use its home-and-home series on April 19-20 to take part in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Strike Out Cancer event. All proceeds will go towards the American Cancer Society.
Leading up to the event the team is going to be selling pink ribbons for one dollar. They will also be collecting flat donations from friends, family and professors. In addition to the flat donation, they will also be asking for people to make a donation per strikeout. The strikeout total will be the combined amount between Buffalo and Canisius during the game on April 20. The team will be wearing pink socks and ribbons and the bases will be spray painted pink.
This event hits home for many members of the UB softball team, who have been affected by cancer in one way or another. Head coach Jen Teague is a cancer survivor herself, having been diagnosed with thyroid cancer in the Fall of 2006. Teague has been in remission for over four years now.
Former Associate Athletic Directory and Senior Woman Administrator Nan Harvey, in which the UB softball field is named after, passed away following a three-year battle with ovarian cancer in 2003.
Since starting the StrikeOut Cancer initiative more than ten years ago, the NFCA has raised thousands of dollars to support the fight against cancer. These vital resources allow the American Cancer Society to continue its lifesaving efforts to prevent cancer, save lives, and diminish suffering from the disease through research, education, advocacy, and service.
