ST. BONAVENTURE, NY – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team rolled to 7-0 victory on Tuesday afternoon at local rival St. Bonaventure. The Bulls are now 8-7 as they head to Niagara for a matchup on Thursday. The victory by the Bulls stopped a four-match win streak for the Bonnies (8-10).
UB took all three doubles matches including a pair by 8-4 margins. At number one, Wojciech Starakiewicz and Vusa Hove downed Chris Post and Elliot Fanshel, 8-4, while at number three, Alex Kalinin and Mitch Zenaty knocked off Luis Guevara and Javier Ortiz. In the number two match, Marcelo Mazzetto and Travis Zappia picked up an 8-6 win over Mikhail Sudakov and Enric Larregola.
The Bulls also took all six singles matches in straight sets. Hove won a second-set tie-breaker over Larregola for his team-leading 17th singles win on the year. Jason Simon, a number four, won his opening set, 6-0, on the way to a win over Fanshel.
"It was good to get outdoors today and face some adversity with windy conditions and chilly temperatures," said UB head coach Lee Nickell. "This is the first match that we had a chip on our shoulder this year and it shows in the result. We plan on carrying this momentum into our match Thursday with Niagara."
The Bulls, winners of three straight will face the Purple Eagles on Thursday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. UB holds a 96-3-1 edge over Niagara in the all-time series.
